With a bass voice praised as "powerful, stalwart and metallic" and a stage presence described as "appealing and enthusiastic," Stephen Clark has established himself as a compelling performer of classical music. He was formerly an ensemble member with the Theater am Goetheplatz in Bremen, Germany where he spent five seasons, making his debut with Graf Ribbing (Sam) in Verdi's Un ballo in maschera. During his tenure there, he developed an extensive repertory of operatic roles: L'elisir d'amore as Dulcamara, Il barbiere di Siviglia as Don Basilio, The Abduction from the Seraglio as Osmin, Don Giovanni as both Leporello and Masetto, Péter Eötvös' Angels in America as Roy Cohn, L'italiana in Algieri as Mustafà, Alcina as Melisso, The Cunning Little Vixen as Harašta, Jenůfa as the Mill Foreman, Falstaff as Pistola, The Queen of Spades as Tsurin, Lulu as the Banker and the Theater Director, Ariadne auf Naxos as Truffaldino, and The Magic Flute as Sarastro and The Speaker, roles which he performed over 30 times in two different productions during his time in Bremen.

While in Germany, Stephen also made debuts with the Volkstheater Rostock as Harašta in The Cunning Little Vixen and, most notably, with the Staatsoper unter den Linden in Berlin as the Mill Foreman in Jenůfa. Beyon his operatic credits, he appeared in with the Bremen Cathedral Choir as Pilate and bass soloist in a performance of Bach's St. John Passion, and was the bass soloist for a concert of selections of Bach's Christmas Oratorio which Theater Bremen performed during the pandemic.

Before his time in Germany, Stephen was a member of Yale University's prestigious opera program, where he studied with Richard and Doris Cross. Credits from his time there include Sarastro in The Magic Flute, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Luka in William Walton's The Bear, the Father-in-Law in Darius Milhaud's Le pauvre matelot, as well as selections from Faust as Mephistopheles, Lucrezia Borgia as Duke Alfonso, and La bohème as Colline. He also appeared as a bass soloist in Stravinsky's Renard with Orchestra New England, Handel's Messiah with the Hartford Chorale, and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Waterbury Symphony, the Hartford Symphony, and the Yale Philharmonia under the baton of Marin Alsop. He has also appeared with Central City Opera as Angelotti in Tosca, Chautauqua Opera as Masetto in Don Giovanni, the Fort Worth Opera Festival as Dr. Grenvil in La traviata and the Ghost in Thomas' Hamlet, and Tulsa Opera as Schaunard in La bohème.

Stephen resides in Chicago, where he works in arts administration with the Lyric Opera and remains an active performer in the city and surrounding areas. He has taken part in projects with Chicago Opera Theater, covering several roles in Shostakovich's The Nose and performing in Remedios Varios, produced through COT's Vanguard Initiative for new works. In concert, he has been the bass soloist with the Apollo Chorus of Chicago in Handel's Messiah and with the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra in Verdi's Messa da Requiem. He also serves as a staff singer with the St. James Cathedral Choir in River North.
